Before choosing William Manchester, who had grown to admire JFK when both were recovering from war wounds in Boston, to write the book about the death of her husband, Jacqueline Kennedy expressed concern about the "commercialization of the assassination." After the book was written, she reportedly was "horrified" at the news Manchester was to receive $650,000 for the LOOK Magazine serialization of his book, The Death Of A President. Newspapers (see Photographs 1 & 7-15 for such reports on the controversy), Manchester said, christened it "The Battle of the Book." The Kennedy family had wanted approval of the 1,200-page manuscript before publication; but after its completion, there erupted "over a half year of tumult in which unbelievable charges were made, unforgivable words spoken and treasured friendships ruptured," Manchester writes in this 102-page, plus covers, excellent condition April 4, 1967, issue of LOOK Magazine, where he gives the figure $665,000 for the LOOK series with more than $500,000 estimated to go to the Kennedy Library. Manchester writes that those around Mrs. Kennedy sought to delete from the LOOK series 6,472 words of mostly political material, but including some "vital facts"; but when she "ultimately saw the manuscript, she asked me to cut some 1,600 words," which he did removing "personal passages that she found objectionable"; & the series ran. The hard cover book sold more than 1.3 million copies. See my Photo 2 for the other contents of this regular issue, which measures about 10-1/2 inches by 13-1/4 inches. For the eBay listing, I've blurred out my name on the address label. Besides the 4 newspaper clippings that mention Manchester, 2 others cover the reburial of 2 Kennedy infants next to JFK's grave. All are from the Chicago Tribune, except for the full page of photos, which is from the Chicago Daily News & "The Book of the Century" article from This Week Magazine.
